A Huge Kimberley Thank You
Published on: Wednesday, February 8th, 2017
Hello Pip & Dick,
What a wonderful surprise we received in the mail this afternoon! Thank you so very much for your generous donation. This will go a long way to assist in covering the ongoing day to day costs incurred by the Student’s attending the KEEP program.
The Wunan Kimberley Education Excellence Program (KEEP) “aims to make a meaningful contribution to Wunan’s strategic priority of closing the gap in Indigenous education by giving young people from the East Kimberley an opportunity to attend school regularly, take advantage of tutoring support, live in a stable and supportive environment, and participate in activities that expand their thinking about what is possible in life.”
We greatly appreciate your desire to help us improve outcomes for local Indigenous people through supporting us to create and sustain real education and life opportunities for these students.
One of our senior students from Halls Creek, Justin, entered the program at Year 7 in 2011. At that time his reading was assessed as Year 1 level and he was unable to tell the time or comprehend basic mathematics. He is now successfully studying towards an apprenticeship at Trades Norwest in Sydney and is a great inspiration to his cohorts and a champion role model for his community back home in the East Kimberley.
We extend our congratulations to Justin Mosquito as our first year 12 graduate of the program. Justin graduated in a ceremony held in Sydney and in front of friends and family was awarded his graduation certificate. Not only that, it is true to say that Justin ‘stole the show’ with many mentions throughout the night, he also picked up several awards including:
– Prize for Outstanding Trade Student in Automotive Year 12
– Prize for the Hibberd Award for the student who has shown resilience and great spirit in the face of challenge
Of course we would be happy to keep you updated on the program if you would be happy to receive a communication from us from time to time.
In the meantime, please see attached photo of myself and some of the office and program staff as we received your news this afternoon. There was much joy in the office! Thank you for making our day and thank you for lending your support to the KEEP program. We are all very grateful.
